Final Project

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8kxa7Zvhxw

I was always thinking about the reality of the world based on people’s perspective. What is real? What is virtual? What is the truth under our eyes? Therefore, I decided to create a project based on people’s different views towards the world. My project was divided into three parts. The first one is virtual and real world. The second part is the change. The final part is the limited or broader world.

Most of the time, we are limited by the hint of the photos. Therefore, I listed some seemly correct photos but when they are compared to their original version, they become false. For example, one of my photos consists of a boy who is standing in front of the building and his inverted image. However, the truth is, the inverted reflection is the real world.

The second part, change, is mainly focus on the difference between time and space. When we see a photo, we will consider the true things are same as the picture. However, the world is always changing. The pictures taken in the same place but at different times are totally different. Therefore, I took two photos in one place. One was took on 6 am while the other one was took on 6 pm.

The final part of my project is the broader world. Most of the time, we are limited by the content of the picture and never know the neighbor world of the photo. Are they more beautiful or not? In this part, I compare the normal photos and wide-angle photos to show the world that neglected by camera.

Brainstorm of the Final Project

I was always thinking about the reality of the world based on people’s perspective. What is real? What is virtual? What is the truth under our eyes?

When I look back the photos I took in China, I was wandering whether it can be used in my final project because I really love them. Therefore, I decided to use the photos taken by two of my friends and me in my previous university in China to reflect my theme.

My project was divided into three parts. The first one is virtual and real world. The second part is the change, which will focus on the difference between time and space. The final part of my project is limited and broad and I want to emphasize the broader world. In my three parts, I will compare some photos of the same place taken in different times or in different perspectives.

Failure

I think my biggest failure this semester is I was late for classes, and sometimes even miss the class. Sorry about that and please let me offer my sincerest apologies. I really like you and the class is interesting. So I really want to wake up on time in the morning but because of the time, I always fail. Besides, I waked up on time some time but when I went out, I found I just missed the bus. Pretty sorry about being late. From this failure, I learned I should gain more perseverance. I am a little easy to beat right now but I believe I will change.
My biggest success in this semester is the use of the applications. I really like to learn some new techniques. I knew how to use Photoshop before but iMovie and Garage band is totally new for me. I think they are fantastic. Before I learned iMovie, I always use Corel VideoStudio to create videos. Compare this two applications, iMovie is easier to learn and to use. Besides, it can upload video to YouTube directly. From my success, I know if something is really interested to me, then I will learn it quickly. Therefore, next time if I want to learn something, I should try my best to find some interest part of it.
If I could redo one project, I will choose to redo Micro Project 4. MP4 is about sound and use Garage band. I use the sound of the process that I checked out in Giant Eagle. In fact, the reason I dislike it is because I think my work do not contain enough creativity. If I redo it, I will create a sound about the bus. How the bus comes. What are the people doing on the bus? Are they fighting, talking, or just listening to the music? I think it will be fun.

My action word is rotate which means turning or cycle. When talking about this word, my first reaction is wheel because it can only go with the help of rotation. Therefore, I took a shot video when I was waiting the NO.2 bus to go to campus at the bus stop near my apartment. Even though it is the wheel that rotates, I still need to shoot the whole car because of the video integrity. During the class, I kept thinking about what else do I see or use every day that can rotate. When I saw the clock on the wall outside my apartment, I knew here it is. The movement of the clock hand is a process of rotation. The clock hand inspired me a lot. I came to realize there are lots of stuffs in my daily life are rotating. For example, the heater, my clarisonic mia, etc. Then I shoot the process of opening the door as the end of my video because the turning key and doorknob are also rotating.

The place I choose is Giant Eagle. I choose Giant Eagle because it is near my apartment, the Olentangy Village. Giant Eagle is a comprehensive supermarket which includes fast food, fruits, raw materials, seasoning, beverage, necessities and etc. I almost go to Giant Eagle every day for simple reasons. Firstly, I like fresh things. So I only buy materials I need for today’s cook. Secondly, I can find everything I want easily with high quality. Thirdly, it serves fast food! That means when I am tired or have no time to cook, I can access food conveniently.
For my project, I recorded the process when I check out because I think the sound of check out is the most unique signal to let me recognize it is Giant Eagle. The electronic voice is what I listen every day and direct me to check out. “Thank you for shopping at Giant Eagle, please remember to take your receipt”. This sentence reminds me I have checked out and should be careful to take my receipt and all my stuff to back to home.

Response to Carver “Cathedral”

In the article, the author’s wife was hired by a blind man and finally, they became friends so she wants to invite the blind man to her house. However, the author feels unhappy because he never knows the blind man before and has no blind friend. He acts rude and impolite when the man came. The blind man, who just lost his wife, is intelligent and the highlight of the article is when the two men sitting together and watching TV. When the TV shows the picture of Cathedral, the author feels difficult to describe it to the blind man even though he can see and tell it. And finally, it is the blind man who teaches the author how to convey information.
In fact, how to convey information is not limited to whether a man is health or blind. Most of the time, when we feel hard to display something, we should think in another way.

Response to Wallace “This is Water”

Personally speaking, I like Wallace’s commencement speech “This is Water” a lot because it teaches us a lot. Wallace points out the fact that everyone is self-centered so that is the way we consider the belief, the facts, and the world. Therefore, it is difficult for a person to change other’s viewpoint because they have totally different experience, they form different belief that determine their attitude. I totally agree the author’s statement. In fact, we should not merely think about how to persuade others, how to let your audiences totally agree with your notion, or how to change others’ mind. Everyone is an independent individual that grow in different environment with different background and education. Therefore, exactly same idea is impossible. We should learn to accept different views and respect them. In addition, it is the different ideas that motivate the development of science and society.
I think the article is great and do not have any problem of it.

Wexner Center

My experience at the Wexner Center was wonderful. In fact, this was my second time visit the Wexner Center. I know nothing about Annie Leibovitz before I went so after the exhibition, I came to realize how famous she is because of the amazing photos. In the exhibit, I am very impressed by a photo named Hunter S Thompson and Jann Webber, taken in New York City in 1976. The woman sat on the right side of the photo held knife seemed like crazy. On the opposite of the woman, a man sat on the chair calmly just looking at her. Behind them, a chair was fired but none of them cared about it. The author blurred the background and only left one picture of devil, who wore mask and hat, starring at the man and woman. I thought devil is the theme of the photo because it was his magic that confused people.
In addition, I also went THE BOX and watched Mary Reid Kelley’s “The Syphilis of Sisyphus”. I came in the box in the middle of the show so I am not really caught the theme of the short movie. I thought the movie was a little weird. The author used strange characters and set to show the theme. Overall, I prefer Annie Leibovitz’s exhibit better because there are lots of awesome photos.

My iphone: My phone is one thing that I take with me everyday and everywhere. Since today is a so called information age, I could not live without my phone. It seems have been one part of my life because I have to use it to keep in touch with my friends, search the Internet and sometimes play games like Temple Run. (necessary)

My ipod: I take my ipod everyday because I love listening to music. When I feel depressed, classic music can calm me down; when I feel tired, some pop music can help me re-energize myself. (adjust emotion)

My ipad: Ipad is necessary for my study. I downloaded lots of e-Books in my ipad because it is a more convenient and lighter way to carry than hard books. Besides, I could also login Carmen and buckeyelink anytime at every place to check the study materials and important event. (convenient)

My Notebook: It is a notebook with calendar so I always use it as a combination of diary and reminder. I do not like to share my secrets and concerns with others so my notebook is a good place to pour out my heart. (secret)

My Cookies: Since the class starts so early and I am a sleepy girl, I seldom wake up on time so I never have time to eat breakfast. However, I have whole day courses on Tuesday and Thursday till 4 p.m. so I always take some cookies or cake with me as the breakfast. (late)

I love bright color and chic pictures so I choose yellow and white cubes as the background. As a person who loves modern technology, I really enjoy the changes they bring to my life. For example, without ipad, I have to take lots of hard books every day. Therefore, ipad is a more convenient and lighter way for a lazy person such as me. These five projects show some of my identity at some degree. Even though some people believe it is better to share your concerns and some bad news with friends, I still like to keep them on my own because I do not want to bother others and let them worry about me. However, on the other hand, the things I carry every day are just some materials I need to take with me for better study. I never carry one thing because it reflects my identity.

Response to Kaprow “Blurring of art and life”

Even though in most of people’s view, the artworks are those stuffs that should only be put in library or museum, the author questioning this statement by providing the example of blushing tooth, an art because of the movement of elbow. According to the author, people always ignore the art in our daily lives. In fact, we could not only simply separate art from life because art occurs everywhere at any time. Everything in our lives can be considered as an art.
This kind of statement reminds me my life and begins to rethink which part of my life can be considered as an art. Then I come to realize the answer is everything. The photo of the people who are waiting for the bus is an art; the birds on the tree can be an art; the rotational movement of wheel of bus is an art… Art is just around us.

In fact, it is really a big problem for me to find the classroom on the first day because I have no idea that there are classrooms in stadium. I always go to school by bus No.2 because I live in Olentangy Village which is not near campus. I get off at high and 19th then take CLS or CC and get off at the next stop at mason hall every Tuesday and Thursday. Therefore, most of the pictures on my map were taken in high street. During the route to campus, Giant Eagle is a land mark near my apartment. Because I am terrible with directions, I have to take photos of the road sign to remember the road name. I also take pictures of some frequented restaurants such as Sushi Bar and Buffalo Wide Wings. I feel so hungry when I took these pictures because I never have time to eat before class. I also take three pictures of Fisher College of Business since I am a student of Fisher. I took all the pictures by my Canon camera. My personal favorite picture is the brand said 2301 to 2317 because on that photo, only 2317 is clear and that emphasize the most important thing.

Response to “Cardiff, Miller and the Power of Sound”

Cardiff and Miller is a couple of artists who are famous of their work of sound. They use sound to record lives and create several project. For example, they use the sound of station to create one project. When the author was on the iPod walking through the train station, he got so involved and focused on what he was hearing in the iPod speakers and what he was seeing on the screen he thought it was actually real life. Therefore, he even tried to avoid the approaching things on unconscious. That reminds me the world’s first film screening in 1985. When Auguste and Louis Lumière played their shot film of train, most of the audience tried to avoid the coming train. Both of the examples reflect the magic of art.
I really like this article and did not find anything problematic to me.

Response to Hornby “Nipple Jesus”

When Dave first looks the picture of Nipple Jesus, he loves it. However, when he gets closer to it and finds the artwork is made by lots of small nipple pictures, he thinks it is rude for Jesus and totally hates the artwork. But finally, after the whole day, he changes his mind again and considers it is an intelligent way to make the artwork brilliant. He even disappointed when the artwork is destroyed because he seems have fallen in love with the artwork. This kind of change reminds me how one’s opinion can change during the time. Most of the time, we people’s opinion will change because the change of time, emotion, environment and others’ opinion. It is often that we see someone have one hobby but as time goes on, he becomes crazy about another thing and totally forgets his love about the original ones.
One thing that confused me a little bit is people’s strong emotion towards the artwork. A Christian even throws eggs to the picture! All in all, it is only a piece of artwork. No matter what it consist of, the whole picture is still Jesus.

My name on campus

Both of the first ten pictures and the second ten pictures are taken in my daily life. I chose the things I like and use materials I want to take those pictures. What makes the second ten pictures different is the last picture that contains my name on campus. In order to make them look unified, I use an photo editing app on my phone to put three pictures together. In addition, the second ten pictures have clear topics and rules to follow. I love the process of the second ten pictures because even though they have some rules to follow, they are more creativity than merely shooting planless. My favorite picture is the radial one in the second set of pictures. I really love it because of the composition. It is a picture of hands of my friends and me. The original theme is to show the rings we bought together but when I looked it once again, I thought it is also a good way to show radial. In addition, another picture I like is the one contains my name. I found my name in Ohio union, in an elevator, and on the wall. I thought it is interesting to find the name in various place in campus and it also is a discovery tour to me because in order to find the letter I want, I have to go to many places.

One day life and Responds to Walker and Barrett articles

My friend Lina came back from Chicago and went to my apartment this morning. It is a box of mooncake she bought in China Town in Chicago.

This is where I live, Olentangy Village.

I love the sky.

This is the sky above the street next to the upper picure. The streets are close to each other but they have totally different sky.

I donot know what is this.

An asian market near my apartment.

The dinner! I am the cook tonight and my friend said they are delicious.

Responds to Walker and Barrett articles
Walker
What makes me feel interested is that the author said big idea is not always same as the theme and subject matter does not mean big idea. Actually, I always consider theme as the most important role in a work of art because the artists have to follow their theme. But now, I come to realize that there is big ideas that beyond the theme. Big idea is kind of a series of theme. The author used the example of Motherwell's art. The theme of his series is death but the big idea is human emotions. In addition, I think it is easy for us to tell the differences between subject matter and big idea. Subject matter is what the painting seems to talk about but big idea is the things the work really about. For example, if a painting is about sunflower, then sunflower is the subject matter. However, the big idea could be happiness, strength, or anything that reflect the spirit of sunflower.
I do not find anything difficult or problematic in this article actually.

The description of black Sambo reflects the stereotypes. Because of fears, the racists may create the black images with various violent tools such as guns or knives. The racists may also said black men are good at sports which, on the other hand, imply they are poor in brain. That kind of phenomenon shows envy and jealous. In fact, it is not rare in our daily life. One may give the demagoguery that his colleague or classmate are dangerous to persuade others they are bad only because he feel threatened by their talent.
One thing that I feel a little confused is the example of Barthes' analysis of the Panzani spaghetti ad. In fact, I could not recognize how this ad reflect the distinction between denotations and connotations. From the article, I know the ad shows the freshness of the products and the Italianicity. Is the freshness means the denotations and Italianicity refers to connotations? I just think it does not illustrate the true meaning detailedly and appropriately.

Kidd, Hickey and Weschler articles

Kidd
In the article "Cheese Monkeys", Kidd (2001) uses an example of Abbott's article then draws the conclusion that we people in the third dimension can see something that never can be seen by people in two dimension. Therefore, we think the people in two dimension are poor. However, compared to this situation, there should also have some other people in fourth dimension or even fifth dimension think we are poor. As a person who believe the existence of alien, I always curious about how people come and how the universe come. A fiction novel impressed me so much. It said one universe is created by a higher universe and so on. For example, a computer game is a world created by human. NPCs are the inhabitant of that world and they have their pre-set life pace. Therefore, maybe the world we live now are also a game created by higher universe.
The opinion that I am not sure in the article is the top and bottom. For me, the important things are always come first or at top. I put the title at top which reflect the theme of my article and absolutely is the most important of the whole article.

Hickey
It is interesting that basketball is designed to solve the delinquency problem originally with nearly no rules. A coach is not necessary at that time because the players could learn themselves and from each other. However, from the viewpoint of education, a basketball team still needs a coach because in that way, many poor kids will have more brilliant future. The connection of basketball, education, basketball gyms, basketball programs and kids' future career remind me the theory of causationism. One result must be caused by some reason, and will also result in another conclusion. For example, the revolution of the earth rotation result in the changes of seasons. The changes of seasons result in the changes of temperature and causes the growth of seeds.
The most difficult one in the article is the first part. I have no idea about those basketball stars' names, their actions and the rules. Honestly, I am not a fan of basketball. The only basketball games I could see is cartoons. Therefore, I know nothing about the rules and the terms. It is just not my taste.

Weschler
One useful thing I found in this article is that 44 facial muscles in ones face are capable to produce 5000 different expressions. This statement remind me to the TV series "lie to me".  In this series, Dr. Lightman reaching the truth through criminals' facial actions and body languages. He claims people will tell three lies every ten minutes and that could be recognize by the micro-expressions in ones face.
What surprised me most is that milk is more difficult than dinosaurs. In my mind, a dinosaur contains millions of muscles and any change of its emotion or action will result in the related changes of muscles and bones. In addition, the fluency of its actions counts a vital important role and needs a lot of work in order to  or a zombie dinosaur
